The North Bay Stand Down – Tent Leaders Needed
October 17 - October 19
Tent Leaders Needed
The North Bay Stand Down is an event designed to assist homeless and at-risk veterans to obtain Department of Veterans Affairs, State of California and/or County services. We set up a three-day event and the Veterans come in via buses or personal transportation. We have tents set up, meals planned, VA, State and County staff as well as community organizations on hand to help with the many issues that our Veterans face. Health, dental, mental health, substance abuse, court services, child support, probation, food stamps, employment services, clothing distribution and many other services are offered.
The veterans and their families attend Tuesday – Thursday (October 17-19. Twenty or more homeless veterans are assigned to each tent along with one to two facilitators. We refer to these facilitators as tent leaders. Grouping participants this way promotes small group shared experiences and a feeling of community quickly. Because, by design of the program, participants in the group access services together, eat together and sleep in the same area, they begin to bond with each other as they undergo common, positive experiences.
Tent Leaders serve as valuable team members who work together with the veterans and are there to assist them as they go through the process of obtaining services. Because we value our Tent Leaders and the contribution they make to the Stand Down process, we will, on a case-by-case basis, evaluate potential Tent Leaders who may lack one or two services of being totally self-sufficient to be Tent Leader Volunteers and to take care of small services while assisting the veterans sharing their tent. This evaluation will be done by the Tent Leader Coordinators with the cooperation of Stand Down management Our goal is to offer all homeless or at-risk veterans a “Hand Up, Not a Hand Out” and we should facilitate all efforts of veterans needing a Hand Up.
Please refer to our website for additional questions and to sign up (after July 1st): Information: www.nbstanddown.org
Tent Leaders need to be able to stay in the tents with the veterans beginning no later than Tuesday 8am through Thursday 4pm.
